That’s a question most, if not all, adults ask themselves at some point in their lives. Who wouldn’t, right? Life can often feel like a perplexing journey, leaving us wondering about our true purpose and meaning. 

“Is life just about having a great job and making money?

“I’m married with kids, and I earn a comfortable living. Now what?”

“Every day, I go to school, sit through classes, and come back home. Surely there’s a greater purpose in my life than just studying?”

As we navigate through the ups and downs, it’s natural to seek guidance and clarity in aligning our lives with a higher calling.

For many, faith in God serves as a guiding light—illuminating the path towards discovering their purpose. By deepening their relationship with God, they embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery and fulfillment.

In this article, we’ll explore the connection between faith and purpose, offering insights and practical steps we hope will help you discover your unique calling.

What is Purpose?

Purpose—the very essence of our existence—is the driving force that propels us forward, giving our lives meaning and direction. For many, it’s the reason we wake up each morning, ready to face the challenges and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead. Without purpose, life can feel like an aimless wandering, lacking the fulfillment and joy we inherently crave.

The Bible affirms this truth in Jeremiah 29:11, where God declares, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” This verse serves as a powerful reminder that God has a unique purpose and destiny for each one of us—a purpose that is intricately woven into the fabric of our being.

When we face obstacles or hardships, knowing what is the purpose of your life will help you have the strength to press on. We find resilience in the knowledge that our struggles are not in vain but rather part of a greater narrative—a narrative in which God is working all things together for our good and His glory.

The Emptiness of a Purposeless Existence

In contrast, a life without purpose can feel like a hollow pursuit of fleeting pleasures and temporary satisfactions. Without a sense of divine direction, many people seek to fill the void with worldly success, material possessions, or superficial relationships. They chase after the next achievement, the next purchase, or the next thrill, hoping to find meaning and happiness in external pursuits.

However, as the book of Ecclesiastes poignantly illustrates, these pursuits ultimately prove to be “vanity and striving after wind” (Ecclesiastes 1:14). No matter how much we accumulate or achieve, the emptiness persists, revealing the futility of a life disconnected from its true purpose.

It is only when we turn to God and seek His will for our lives that we discover the deep satisfaction and contentment our hearts long for. As Augustine famously declared, “Our hearts are restless until they find rest in You.” In surrendering to God’s purpose, we find the missing piece that completes the puzzle of our existence.

Aligning Your Will with God’s

The journey of finding your true purpose begins with a profound act of surrender—a willingness to lay down your own plans and ambitions at the feet of the Almighty. It requires a humble recognition that His ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). 

Yes, it’s easier said than done, but necessary all the same. It’s so easy for us to get caught up in what “I want to do” when exploring what is the purpose of my life.

Aligning your will with God’s involves a daily choice to prioritize His desires above your own. It means setting aside personal preferences and selfish pursuits in favor of obedience and faithfulness. As you learn to trust in His goodness and wisdom, you discover that His plans for you are far better than anything you could have imagined for yourself.

This alignment is beautifully illustrated in the story of our very own senior pastor, Rev Elisha Satvinder and his wife, Petrina, who were obedient to God’s calling to return to Malaysia to start a church, while they were studying abroad. 

Their willingness to follow God’s leading not only resulted in the establishment of New Covenant Community Church but also birthed the transformative work of the Dignity for Children Foundation over 25 years ago. Their obedience to God’s will and calling had a ripple effect that continues to impact lives to this day.

Discerning God’s Voice

But yes, I know it’s not straightforward to discern God’s voice and direction for our lives. 

It is a crucial aspect of aligning your will with His. It requires cultivating a deep intimacy with Him through consistent prayer and immersion in His Word. As you regularly spend time in His presence, you become attuned to the gentle whispers of the Holy Spirit, who guides you into all truth (John 16:13). 

As you learn to listen to His promptings and follow His leading, you discover a newfound clarity and confidence in decision-making. You begin to recognize the subtle nudges and confirmations that point you towards the path God has ordained for you

Alongside that, seeking godly counsel from mature believers can also provide invaluable wisdom and insight as you navigate the path of purpose. Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that “in the multitude of counselors there is safety.” Surrounding yourself with individuals who are committed to walking in obedience to God can offer encouragement, accountability, and fresh perspectives on your quest to discover what is the purpose of your life.

Pursuing Your Calling

Your calling is the specific way in which God desires to use you to fulfill His purposes in the world. It is the unique intersection of your gifts, talents, experiences, and passions—all divinely orchestrated to bring glory to His name and advance His kingdom.

Pursuing your calling often requires stepping out in faith and embracing the uncertain. It may involve taking risks, leaving behind comfort zones, and venturing into uncharted territory. Yet, as you trust in God’s faithfulness and provision, you discover that He equips you with everything you need to fulfill the mission He has entrusted to you—the purpose of your life.

Overcoming Obstacles

The path of purpose is rarely a smooth one. Along the way, you may encounter obstacles, setbacks, and challenges that threaten to derail your progress. Fear, insecurity, and self-doubt can creep in, tempting you to shrink back from the call God has placed on your life.

In these moments, it is crucial to keep your eyes fixed on the One who called you. Remembering that your identity and worth are rooted in Christ gives you the courage to persevere, even when the road ahead seems daunting. Fulfilling your God-given purpose is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey of obedience and faithfulness. It involves embracing the daily opportunities and responsibilities that God places before you, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.

It means being faithful with the gifts, talents, and resources God has entrusted to you, using them to bless others and advance His kingdom. Whether it’s through your work, your relationships, your ministry, or your daily interactions, every moment becomes an opportunity to live out your calling.

As you navigate the ups and downs of life, maintaining an eternal perspective is essential. It helps you stay anchored in the truth that your ultimate purpose transcends the temporal successes and failures of this world.
