You Are Not Alone: Facing Storms With Community
Introduction
In “You Are Not Alone: Facing Storms With Community,” part of the series “Rediscovering The Jesus We Thought We Knew,” Pastor Foo Seng explores how Jesus calls us to face life’s storms together as a community. Using the account of Jesus calming the storm in Mark 4:35–41, the message reminds us that following Jesus is not a solo journey. We are called to support, encourage and love one another, even when living in community brings challenges.
Key Points
1. Our Love for One Another Is Our Testimony
Scripture: John 13:35
Jesus teaches that people will recognise His disciples by the way they love one another. More than the programmes we organise or the things we say, our actions, care, forgiveness and relationships with one another reflect Christ to the world.
2. Community Should Sharpen, Not Dull Us
Scripture: Proverbs 27:17
Living together will naturally bring disagreements and challenges. However, God intends for us to sharpen one another and strengthen each other’s faith, rather than discourage or hurt one another through our words and actions.
3. Bear With and Forgive One Another
Scripture: Colossians 3:13
We are called to endure one another’s imperfections and extend grace when someone hurts us. Forgiveness does not mean forgetting what happened or pretending the hurt was never there. It means choosing to extend the same grace that God has freely given us through Jesus.
4. Address Conflict With Love, Not Gossip
Scripture: Matthew 18:15–17; Proverbs 16:28
When someone hurts us, Jesus teaches us to address the issue directly and privately. If necessary, we can seek help from trusted people and church leaders. Gossip only creates division and damages relationships. Instead, we should speak with one another in love and work towards reconciliation.
5. Let the Peace of Christ Rule in Our Relationships
Scripture: Colossians 3:15; Ephesians 4:29
Jesus did not take the disciples out of the boat. He brought peace into it. In the same way, Jesus must remain at the centre of our relationships. Our words should build others up, and we should seek His peace through the Holy Spirit, especially in difficult relationships.
Conclusion
Living in community is not always easy. We will disagree, disappoint one another and sometimes cause hurt. But God calls us to keep rowing together, bearing with one another, forgiving one another and choosing love over gossip.
Our greatest testimony is not simply what we say about Jesus, but how we treat the people around us.
We are not meant to face life’s storms alone. We are called to row together, with Jesus at the centre, bringing His peace into our relationships.
