November arrives, and suddenly Kuala Lumpur transforms. The malls fill with glittering decorations. Christmas trees appear in every corner. A cheerful man in red waves from store displays. It’s festive. It’s familiar. But somewhere between the shopping lists and the holiday rush, have you ever paused to ask: What’s Christmas really about?

If you’ve sensed there’s something more—something deeper beneath the tinsel and traditions—you’re right. Rediscovering Christmas means looking past the surface celebrations to find what makes this season truly worth celebrating.

Short answer: Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, God’s son sent into the world as the ultimate expression of divine love, offering salvation and hope to all humanity (Luke 2:10-11).

The Reason for the Season: More Than Festivities

There’s nothing wrong with Christmas trees or gift-giving or festive meals with loved ones. These traditions can be beautiful expressions of joy and generosity. But they’re not the reason for the season.

The heart of Christmas is found in a single, extraordinary event: God entering human history as a vulnerable baby. Not in a palace. Not with fanfare. But in a humble stable in Bethlehem.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6, NIV

This prophecy, written centuries before Jesus’ birth, captures the wonder of Christmas—that the Creator of the universe would become one of us.

Why God Chose a Manger

The circumstances of Jesus’ birth tell us something profound about God’s character. He didn’t arrive with power and prestige. He came in weakness and humility. Mary and Joseph, far from home, found themselves in a stable. The Son of God was born among animals, laid in a feeding trough.

The first to hear the news? Not kings or priests, but shepherds working the night shift in nearby fields. These weren’t society’s elite. They were ordinary people doing ordinary work.

This matters because it reveals how God works. He meets us where we are. He enters into our world—our struggles, our limitations, our humanity—not to judge from a distance, but to save from within.

Rediscovering Christmas Through Jesus’ Story

When the shepherds and wise men came to worship the newborn king, they couldn’t have fully grasped what they were witnessing. This baby would grow up to teach about love and justice. He would heal the sick and welcome the outcast. He would challenge religious hypocrisy and demonstrate what it means to live for others.

And then, in an act of unfathomable love, he would die on a cross.

This is why rediscovering Christmas means we can’t separate the manger from the cross. We celebrate Jesus’ birth because of what his death and resurrection accomplished—redemption, forgiveness, reconciliation with God. The humble baby in Bethlehem came with a purpose: to offer us hope that extends far beyond a single season.

This season invites us to marvel at God’s rescue plan for humanity, enacted through the most unlikely means.

Making Christmas Personal This Year

So what does it look like to truly celebrate the reason for the season? Here are a few simple ways to centre your Christmas on what matters most:

  • Create space for reflection. Amid the busyness, set aside quiet moments to read through the Christmas story in the Gospels—Luke 2 and Matthew 1-2. Let the familiar words speak fresh truth to you.
  • Reach out with intention. Make a list of people you want to connect with this season. Not out of obligation, but genuine care. Send a thoughtful message. Make a phone call. Share a meal together. Let your love for them reflect God’s love for you.
  • Look for ways to serve. Christmas isn’t just about receiving; it’s about giving as God gave to us. Who in your community needs help? Where can you show compassion? Small acts of generosity become profound when done in the spirit of Christ’s love.

These aren’t religious duties to check off. They’re invitations to experience the joy of Christmas more fully—to move from simply observing the season to actually living it.

Hope That Lasts Beyond December

Here’s the beautiful truth about rediscovering Christmas: the hope it offers doesn’t expire on December 26th. God’s love for you—expressed through sending his Son—remains constant every day of the year.

Christmas is the reason we can have joy even when life is hard. It’s why we can have hope even when circumstances feel hopeless. The baby in the manger grew up, died on a cross, and rose from the grave—conquering sin and death forever. That changes everything.

Rather than being just another festive season on the calendar, Christmas becomes a celebration of redemption. Of second chances. Of God making a way when there seemed to be no way.

Now it’s up to us to respond to this gift.
