Rediscovering Christmas – The Reason for The Season

Image

We are exposed to the vibrant festivities of Christmas year after year—mall decorations go up in November, Christmas trees pop up everywhere, and a chubby man in a red and white suit comes out to greet us all season long… have you ever stopped to wonder, “What’s Christmas really about? Is there something more to it?”

Yes, there’s more to Christmas beyond Santa Claus and the festivities. There is a deep spiritual significance that is the foundation of this joyous season.

Beyond the glittering lights, there is an important message of divine love and hope expressed through the birth of Jesus Christ. Christmas signifies the profound act of God sending His Son into the physical world; a humble gesture that brought salvation and offered eternal hope to mankind.

As we explore the meaning of Christmas, our first step is to acknowledge the extraordinary gift God bestowed upon us: Jesus.

The birth of Jesus, born in a simple manger, signifies God’s deliberate choice to connect with us on a personal level—a human level. Through this act of humility and vulnerability, God expressed his profound love for mankind through an act of great humility and simplicity. As the shepherds and wise men celebrated Jesus’ birth, little did they know that Jesus would be embarking on a sacrificial journey that would culminate in His death on the cross. Christmas invites us to reflect on the significance of this sacrifice and the redemption it offers, through the celebration of Jesus’ birth.

We celebrate the birth of Jesus because of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

The Opportunities of Christmas

So, what can we do next Christmas to intentionally reflect on and experience God’s love for us?

  • Set aside time for prayer and reflection.Give yourself space to go through the Gospels, which tell us the story of Jesus Christ.
  • Make a list of the people we want to connect with and bless.Include also a list of all the ways we can express our love and gratitude to them—such as sending cards, calling them, giving gifts, or visiting.
  • Make a list of the people we want to help and serve. As above, include also all the ways we can show our compassion and generosity to them as an extension of what God did for us by giving us his son, Jesus Christ.

Christmas isn’t just a season of joy—it’s the reason for joy.

How marvelous it is to know of such love! God’s profound act of sending His son makes way for us to celebrate hope not just leading up to the 25th of December, but all 365 days of the year and throughout our lives. Rather than being just another festive season, it’s a season of experiencing true love and joy within us, knowing that we have been given the gift of redemption through Jesus Christ.

May this good news guide you as you journey through the rest of the year till Christmas. May you be led to ultimate hope, knowing that the humble birth, death, and glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ has brought us eternal redemption beyond anything that we could imagine.

Now it’s up to us to respond to this gift…

Isaiah 9:6 “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
