Mental health and well-being are essential for everyone, especially for young people who are facing various challenges and transitions in their lives. However, many young people in Malaysia are struggling with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, stress, and substance abuse.

According to a survey by the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Life-Style Campaign in 2000, the percentage of emotional problems among Malaysian teenagers was 49% and aggressiveness was 41%. These findings indicate a high level of mental distress among Malaysian youth, which can have negative impacts on their physical health, academic performance, social relationships, and future prospects.

Factors that contribute to the poor mental health and well-being of young people in Malaysia include:

Exposure to adversity: Many young people face difficult situations such as poverty, violence, abuse, bullying, family conflict, or discrimination based on their ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. These experiences can cause trauma, low self-esteem, anger, fear, or hopelessness.

Pressure to conform: Young people often feel the need to fit in with their peers, family, or society’s expectations. They may face pressure to excel in their studies, career, or personal life, or to adopt certain values, beliefs, or behaviours. This can lead to stress, anxiety, or identity confusion.

Media influence: Young people are constantly exposed to various sources of information and entertainment through the internet, social media, television, or other platforms. These media can shape their perceptions of themselves and others, as well as their aspirations for the future. However, some media can also promote unrealistic or harmful standards of beauty, success, or happiness.

Lack of access to quality support and services: Many young people do not have adequate access to mental health care or other resources that can help them cope with their problems. They may face barriers such as stigma, cost, distance, or lack of awareness. They may also not receive enough support from their family, friends, teachers, or community.

To address these challenges and improve the mental health and well-being of young people in Malaysia, some possible solutions include:

Promoting socio-emotional learning and psychological well-being: Young people should be taught skills such as coping, problem-solving, communication, empathy, and resilience that can help them manage their emotions and deal with challenges. They should also be encouraged to develop positive habits such as healthy sleep patterns, regular exercise, and hobbies that can enhance their mood and self-esteem.

Creating protective and supportive environments: Young people should be provided with safe and nurturing spaces where they can express themselves freely and receive care and guidance from adults. They should also be involved in meaningful activities that can foster their sense of belonging and purpose.

By implementing these solutions, young people in Malaysia can improve their mental health and well-being and enjoy a better quality of life. They can also contribute to the social and economic development of their country and the world. Mental health and well-being are not only important for individuals, but also for communities and societies.
